![]() Ward said after practice that’s something we’ll likely continue to see throughout the season. Reunited with Deshaun Watson, Browns TE Jordan Akins is bullish about QB, offenseĪgain, we’re still in the experimental stage of things, but it was interesting to see Denzel Ward in the slot when Schwartz first called for his nickel defensive package. We’ve seen bits and pieces of wide receivers lining up in the backfield, jet motions and what appear to be designed rollouts or run-pass options, but mostly just glimpses to this point. ![]() How his exact role shakes out remains to be seen, but from two open practices, it’s clear the Browns want to get him the ball on short passes and let him create. We’re seeing Moore line up in different spots and plenty of Moore going in motion. ![]() The Browns’ first training camp practice is July 22 at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, seven weeks from Saturday. The Browns have two more OTAs to end this week, then close the offseason program with their mandatory minicamp next week. Those players hit the dummies while steering clear of the quarterback on each play to simulate what Schwartz wants and what the Browns hope will be their blueprint: let Watson build a lead, then turn the pass-rushers loose. Schwartz’s emphasis on attacking shows up in the 7-on-7 sessions when he lines up two defensive ends who aren’t among the seven in the play and has them target two tackling dummies set up seven or so yards behind the line of scrimmage. Schwartz has stressed that spring football is just about reps and communication, and that nothing involving a real depth chart or playing with the proper physicality will come about until training camp. It’s one of the reasons as a play caller, as a defense coordinator, I’ve always liked to be on the sideline, because you don’t make calls in a vacuum. Right now, when things are new, I can get my ears real close to them and I can hear where the communication is. “I don’t know if I’ll be out there all the time. “I’m just out there right now just trying to hear guys communicate, just to have a little presence out there and those things,” Schwartz said. From there, he gets an up-close look at what he still says are basic installations and has delivered instant, direct and often colorful feedback. New defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz generally lined up right next to the center for the 7-on-7 sessions and coached his defense from the middle of the play. In what’s essentially a passing camp, you’re basically looking for completions and the occasional ‘wow’ play. Given that there are so many new faces in the receiving corps and that he’s running four or five scripted plays at a time, it would be hard for any player to really find a rhythm and it remains both unfair and impossible for any outside observer to reach any real conclusions about what the offense will look like when it’s fully installed. I felt like Watson threw with more authority and more accuracy in the second open practice than he did in the first. Phillips’ participation in competitive drills is a sign of progress in his road back from a pectoral injury that ended his 2022 season. Juan Thornhill deflected it and another player may have, too, before Phillips caught the deflection. The defensive highlight of the day came via a Jacob Phillips interception on a pass Watson threw towards Donovan Peoples-Jones but into triple coverage. The first was a slowly-developing play on which Goodwin was wide open and Watson launched the ball probably 50-55 yards down the field on the second, Watson threw a strike 30 or so yards and Goodwin may not actually have gotten both feet inbounds after a slight bobble, but it was an impressive throw and Goodwin’s speed has shown up.īuilding chemistry on the deep ball □ /zNVNUBPuvl Watson found Goodwin on two deep highlight throws in the second open practice. In the first open practice, Watson’s best throw came on a similar short-area play to Marquise Goodwin. Their best connection of the day came in a red-zone 7-on-7 period for a touchdown as Moore used a double move and turned to see the ball delivered right where he wanted it. Moore was frequently targeted by Deshaun Watson throughout the practice, mostly on quick passes.
